Leif Schröder

German Cancer Research Center / Heidelberg University

Leif Schröder studied Physics in Göttingen and Heidelberg and obtained his PhD with a project investigating quantum mechanical fine structure of in vivo NMR spectra. He then moved to the University of California at Berkeley with an Emmy Noether fellowship from the DFG in 2005. During his four year stay in Berkeley, he worked on novel MRI techniques based on hyperpolarized xenon biosensors.

He returned to Germany with an Emmy Noether grant from the DFG and received an ERC Grant for leading the respective BiosensorImaging project at the FMP from 2009-2015. He then headed the Molecular Imaging Group until 2023 to develop novel tools for ultra-sensitive NMR and MRI applications.

In 2020, he was appointed as head of the Division of Translational Molecular Imaging at DKFZ, supported by the Dieter Morszeck Foundation. He has also been appointed full professor for Molecular Systems in Diagnostic Magnetic Resonance in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Heidelberg University as of 2023.
