Carel Windt

Forschungszentrum Jülich

Carel Windt is a senior research scientist at Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany, specializing in the development and application of magnetic resonance (MR) methods to study plants. He earned his PhD at the laboratory of Biophysics at Wageningen University, the Netherlands, where he worked on MRI velocimetric methods to visualize and quantify phloem and xylem sap flow. At the Forschungszentrum Jülich he established a laboratory focused on small-scale mobile MR, and particularly the design and construction of devices that are suitable for field and greenhouse environments. These instruments are now used for real-time monitoring of plant water status, sap flow and grain filling, for example in the framework of phenotyping for resistance to heat and drought. His work on affordable portable MR devices aims to make the technology accessible and useful for disciplines such as plant biology, breeding, horticulture and agronomy.
